This is the first issue of a monthly newsletter which we hope you will make a regular part of you prevention- related reading. The title, "Connections," shows our interest in connecting people with what's happening or being planned, what people are thinking and saying. This in turn connects with prevention of substance abuse and related problems. Each of the items is on a separate page and easily copied for distribution. "Teachable moments" and "talking points" can be an important part of that work. Please share with us your comments, suggestions and proposals for future issues. Let's stay connected!

  •    A sign of things to come? The parents of a girl paralyzed in an accident caused by an intoxicated football fan have sued the National Football League, contending the league should be held responsible for the girl's injuries. The lawsuit says the league promoted the kind of behavior that led the fan to drink 14 beers at a New York Giants game in 1999 and then drive home." (AP, 10/13/03). The Verni family of Cliffside Park NJ appeared on NBC, ABC and CNN morning shows along with their attorneys

The Kansas City Star followed with a story entitled "Trouble Brews: Lawsuit Could Quench NFL's Taste for Beer" (10/20/03), on the day the Oakland Raiders-KC Chiefs game was designated "Freshness Night" by Anheuser-Busch. "The issue is the NFL making billions of dollars on their 'official beer'" says Ronald Verni, an accountant who at one time audited the NY Giants financial statements when the club was a client.
