| Greetings!
Summer is finally here! The last thing you want to think about is
the next school year, but give me a minute. Now is the time to start
thinking ahead and planning events. Underage drinking prevention
requires a lot of work and you are a huge part of the solution. This
is a great time for you to start thinking about what you need to do
locally. What can you do in your community? Changing the way people
think, especially adults, can be hard. What are the problems in your
community involving underage drinking? How can you be part of the
solution? Teens are changing communities for the better all over the
country. MYAA is looking for ideas for statewide events involving
teens. What do YOU want to do to meet teens from around the state?
We need to hear from you so together we can plan events to make your
voice heard.
Good news!! The state wide Keg Registration bill has passed both
houses and is the on Governor's desk to be signed! The original Keg
Reg Bill (HB36) did not make it out of committee, BUT thanks to the
hardwork of Rep. Cathy Jolly from Kansas City, Keg Reg was added as
an amendment to a bill that was moving sucessfully through the
legilative process. This will require adults over the age of 21 that
purchase kegs to register their name, address, phone, and a sign a
statement that states they will not provide to a minor and if they
do, tough penalities apply. If the keg is caught at an underage
drinking party, it can be traced to the person that provided it.
This does not start until July 2004, so we need to work together to
educate the state about this new law. Many of our teens have worked
hard in their communities and statewide to help get this passed!
Thanks for all of your hard work! Keep it up.

Most teens feel like they need to do
something to stop underage drinking in their community. The
most common question is, "Where do I start? What can I do?"
Get a group of teens together that have the same goal as
you. Take some time to really sit back and look at your
community. What are the laws against underage drinking? Are
they enforced? What are the penalities? Where are teens
getting the alcohol? Where are teens drinking? Take time and
really discuss the answers to these questions.
These are the first things to look at in your community.
Once you done your homework and figured out what needs to
cahnge in your community, contact your city officals, (Mayor,
City Council, or the City Manager), to discuss what policies
you would like to see implemented to reduce underage drinking.
I bet you'll be surprised at how much help they will give you.

| Radio Daze: Alcohol Ads Tune in Underage
Youth New Study Shows Underage Youth Hear More Radio Ads for
Beer and Spirits than Adults Washington, DC - America's youth
heard more beer and distilled spirits commercials on the radio
in 2001 and 2002 than did people of legal drinking age,
according to a report released by the Center on Alcohol
Marketing and Youth at Georgetown University. Wine
advertisers, on the other hand, exposed youth to significantly
less radio advertising than adults. "Youth under 21 top the
charts when it comes to exposure to alcohol advertising," said
the Center's executive director Jim O'Hara. "The fact that
kids under 21 hear more beer and distilled spirits ads than
people 21 and older should concern everyone who cares about
our children."
