2002 State of Missouri Substance Abuse
Prevention Needs Assessment

The Department of Mental Health, Divison of Alcohol and Drug Abuse, under the direction of the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (CSAP), conducted a formal assessment of Missouri's prevention needs.  The Prevention Needs Assessment consisted of four research-based studies, each with a specific focus and objective.  The purpose of the studies was to provide a framework of data and procedures to inform planning decisions.  The data will assist prevention planners and policy makers with indentifying high-risk populations, justifying the approaches selected, and assessing the effectiveness of those efforts.

The Missouri Prevention Needs Assessment also provides data for the indetification of populations and geographic areas at greatest risk for substance abuse problems.  The following is a description and geographic areas at greatest risk for substance abuse problems.  The following is a description and purpose of the four studies.

Study 1, Missouri Student Survey

Missouri Student Survey, identifies substance use, violent behaviors, and risk and protective factors of Missouri students in grades 6, 8, 10 & 12.  The study provides prevalence data, age of first use, violent behavior, and risk & protective factors within individual, peer, school, and community settings.

Study 2, Substance Abuse Prevention Needs in Missouri Counties

Substance use prevention needs in Missouri counties:  A risk assessment using social indicators identifies the needs of each county based on various risk factors associated with possible substance abuse.

Study 3, Missouri Community Resource Assessment

Missouri Community Resource Assessment, provides a survey format to identify to assess the same prevention resources available throughout the state.  The survey instrument gathers information on the content, population served, and distribution of prevention resources throughout the state.
